How important is our body language at an interview?

During the first few minutes when we meet someone we form a strong and lasting impression of them. Research has indicated that a large part of this impression comes from the non-verbal messages we give out, our body language and the way we choose to dress.

Our appearance is seen by others as a reflection of our personality and values, who we are and who we want to be.

So it is important when we attend an interview that our body language is speaking up for us.  The way we walk through a door shows immediately how confident or not we are feeling.  So when you are attending an interview it is important that you don’t hesitate, instead take a deep breath, smile and walk into the room confidently; shake hands with the interviewer(s) if they suggest they are expecting this.

Our eye contact is also very important in such situations. Looking at someone (but not staring) shows you are confident and paying attention.

Our stance is also important so stand upright with your head up, shoulders back and arms relaxed at your side.

When sitting, try to keep still, leaning slightly forward shows you are interested in what is being said. Use your hands naturally to convey additional empathy.

Making an effort with our appearance and dress will score you additional points at an interview as it demonstrates that you are taking the interview seriously.  That said your choice of clothes should be reserved, dark plain colours, e.g. a black or navy suit for men or jacket and skirt for ladies is preferable and avoid wearing anything that is likely to cause a distraction, e.g. a gaudy tie, jangly buttons or ‘loud’ jewellery. You want the interviewer to concentrate on what you are saying not what you are wearing!
