• Good presentation is of paramount importance, bear in mind that most employers will spend less than a couple of minutes scanning your CV to see if the information they are looking for jumps out at them so make sure that the information on the first page catches their attention.

• Statements should be short and punchy as these have more impact than long and complex sentences.

• Ensure your CV includes plenty of white space so that the page is easy on the eye, use clear headings and bullet points to highlight specific information, e.g. key skills and selected achievements.

• Does your CV look professional and if sending a hard copy is it printed on good quality, white A4 paper e.g. 100/110 gsm gives the impression of quality and demonstrates that you think the document is worth reading. Use font size 12 or 11 but no less than 11.

• Does your CV show you in a positive light (check you haven’t undersold yourself) but also don’t oversell yourself– remember that you will be asked about the information in your CV at the interview.

• Do not include a photograph unless asked to do so by the employer.

• Check your CV includes all appropriate major achievements that are relevant to the position you are applying for.

• Ensure your CV does not include complex words or jargon- (if abbreviations are necessary then ensure you have also written the word in full when you write it for the first time followed by the abbreviated version thereafter).

• Your CV should be a maximum of two pages…….. or better still one page.

• Have you asked someone else who knows you well to read it and give you feedback. Do they think you have included all your qualities, skills and experience necessary for the position you are applying for?
